Better known as fever on the lips, Herpes labialis is the most common pathology in mankind.
The responsible agent is Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and 90% of the population carries this virus variant.
A second variant (HSV-2) is only responsible for 2% of the cases.
If the virus infects people who have never previously contract has the primary herpetic infection. After this infection, the virus stays in the body at a latency stage and then, under particular conditions, it can reactivate and manifest itself recurrently and circumscribed.
The incubation period is 10 days, the infection occurs with fever and erimative pharyngitis followed by vesicular eruptions in the oral cavity and lip. The vesicles then join up ulcerating and forming gray-yellowish aftoid patches. The pain is usually very intense and this makes it difficult to ingest any food. Healing takes place within 10 to 15 days and in children, the infection can spread to other parts of the body.
The HSV-2 variant manifests itself as genital infection and affects the sexually active population, incubation is 5 days and is followed by a localized erythematous vesiculation. At a later stage, the vesicles break. In women at the same time, there may be exudative vaginitis accompanied by general fever and malaise. Generally, healing takes place in 15 to 20 days.
At the end of the primary infection, the virus penetrates the nerve endings of the epidermis and stays there in a latent state.
There is no limit for this virus; it can attack continuously any number of times. If you are facing a cold sore for the first time then you need to consult your doctor for advice. One common method to make the virus dormant is to use DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide). Dimethylsulfoxide is a very powerful medication for cold Sores as it kills the cells which cause the sore.
The cold sore dies when these cells are killed and the virus becomes weak and dormant. Dimethylsulfoxide liquid has the ability to permeate living tissue. This gel is available in various concentrations. Generally, it is recommended to use 70% concentrate cream (do contact your doctor about exact guidance). Results also have shown that people using DMSO had a quicker recovery than non-users. It is a potentially safe liquid and it is useful for recurrent herpes.
DMSO medication can be used in conjunction with other medications such as oral acyclovir. It is generally recommended that DMSO be used on alternate days or every other day. Please read the DMSO disclaimer and also take advice of your doctor before using these products.
Visible blisters due to this virus last for 9 – 12 days and after this period virus enters into remission period. There are two types of herpes simplex virus type 1 and type 2. Type 1 herpes simplex virus attacks the body parts above the waistline and type 2 virus attacks the body parts below the waistline.
There are anti-viral medications and topical treatments for this virus. There are also reported cases of cure from alternate medicines. During visible viral attack, one should take adequate care of not transmitting this disease to others.
The best thing would be to use a natural remedy for cold sores, always with the support of the doctor.
